Mk 2 rear lamps
Hi,
I have a 1995 Rover Cooper spi to which I have fitted a works style reversing lamp. I was wondering if the mk2 rear lamps would fit in place of the rear lamps with he built in reversing lamp.
Any advice?

Hmm .. think I'll leave it as is, was hoping for straight swap. I've only just got it back on the road after a 3 year saga with engine / gearbox problems.
Thanks anyway

hazard light switch + fog light problem for mot.
And the fuse too, it's the in-line fuse (mounted behind the air filter) with a 10amp rating - Blue/Orange Wire for the Rear Fog Guard Lamp.

Who fitted the high level rear brake lamp? And was it easy to wire up?

Re:
I believe MK2/3 rear lamps (without the reversing lamps) are slightly smaller, so you will have problems getting them to fit.
That's probably why the most common mod is to fit MK1 rear lamps, because the bodywork adapter plates are available.

Blown fuse
The reverse lamps share a common green wire power feed with the rear screen heater, indicator flasher unit, and the stop lamp switch. the reverse lamp wire is green with brown trace. stop lamp switch is green with purple trace. heated rear screen and indicator are plain green.
I think you have a faulty reverse switch or short to earth in your reverse lamp wiring (split cable insulation or melting that is now rubbing to the vehicle body)
You need to isolate each cable run and put a test meter on it to see if it is shorting to earth. Work on each section at a time to locate it. Once you find the suspect then link it out with a temporary replacement to prove. Once confirmed you need to perform surgery on the wiring loom to replace the faulty section.

engine wont turn over
yeah i can drive it fine still road legal everything works fine just looks bit like its been in one of those banger races drivers door dont lock tho stays shut but lock mecanism is kinda ground off so wont turn. basicly frount bumper is bent frount pannel is bent behind bumper where it hit and bent over a lamp post. :-S wing on drivers side is dented, a pannel scrached, door pannel dented, rear side pannel and b post bent in slightly, roof slightly bent at edge and few small dents and rear seam pushed in slightly. still drives fine tho. im going to look for a new shell for it, maybe il rebuild a mk1 shell for it, wont have to pay road tax then or pass any emishions test if its registered as a 60's mini.

engine problems can any one help please
can try and give it a go but it will only be an educated gess. if u really want it running right rolling road is the way to go, as ur engine isnt a common setup using 3 into 1 manifold (most commonly used on race engines) with rc40 exhaust and alloy intake but no other mods it makes it difficult to compare. u may have to by seval needles before it runs ok. at 8 pound a go it will soon add up plus have pastage each time. so id get it to a rolling road and have it running spot on. iv not wired up spot lamps before but i gess u either wire it on a separate circit or in with the rear fog lamp. id gess ud find a live wire connect a switch to it and a inline fuse 10amp maybe and then have other wire going to an earth.

Wiring mess
The rear lights on my 1990 Mayfair have stopped working. When I put a new fuse in it blows as soon as I switch on the lights. My local electrical specialist says the wiring is all in a tangled mess, it needs a new wiring loom and he wont touch it. It seems a shame to kill Bullet as everything else is working, but I cant keep driving him at night with just a fog lamp. It may not be worth repairing though if its too expensive. Any ideas or recommendations? Thanks, Deborah

A Wiring Nightmare, auto electricians do you want a challenge.
Have you checked the in-line fuse that runs the rear fog lamp? You'll find that and the others hidden behind the air-filter box.
Here's a list of all the fuses and in-line fuses as fitted to 1976-1996 Minis and I've included the wiring colours. I doubt you'll need to rewire the car as it's sure to be something simple and perhaps the fog lamp is knackered which will be far cheaper to replace: -
Standard 4 fuse box mounted on the bulkhead: - 1 1-2 35amp Brake Lights, Reverse Lights, Direction Indicators & Rear Screen Demister. 2 3-4 25amp Horn, Headlamp Flasher, Brake Failure Circuit & Radio Memory. 3 5-6 25amp Heater Blower Motor, Windscreen Wipers, Washer Motor & Instruments. 4 7-8 15amp Side & Tail Lights & Panel Lights. 1-2 These circuits only operate with the ignition switch at position "II". 5-6 These circuits only operate with the ignition switch at position "I" or "II".
In-Line Fuses situated behind air-filter on the bulkhead: - 15amp - Purple/Orange Wire Hazard Warning & Interior Lamps 15amp - Brown/Orange Wire Dim-Dip Lighting 10amp - Blue/Orange Wire Rear Fog Guard Lamps 15amp - Blue/Red Wire Auxiliary Cooling Fan (where fitted)
4 Fuse box wiring colours: - White - Green Brown - Purple Light Green/White - Light Green/Orange Red - Red/Green

lights
The front and rear sidelights are on different circuits, effectively, though eventually they go back to 1 fuse.
The wire to the front sidelights comes down the left-hand side of the engine bay (as you look at it from the front) and splits and goes to the other side. There is a bullet connector at that point and that's the first point to check for dirt, etc.
The rear is similar - the wiring goes to the right-hand side lamp (as you look at it form the rear) first, then splits across to the other side. There is a bullet connector just inside the boot, near the left-hand hinge. You shouldn't need to remove the tank to see this, though the connectors to the light fitting itself are inaccessible.
The rear foglamp is entirely separate, and you may well find the lamp fitting is badly corroded inside, the wires have fallen off it, or the switrch is faulty, or the fuse is blown - or a combination of all 4 of these!

Side repeaters and MOT's
Hey Ho,
A rear fog lamp has been a legal requirement since the late 60's early 70's. Regretfully, I was not born yet and as such, cannot confirm the exact date.
If your mini has no rear fog lamp, it will fail.
Regards

Mystery fuse
I know exactly what you mean. I have a very late Mayfair 998 which has four in line fuses behind the air cleaner as opposed to models in the handbook which which only have three in line fuses listed. Have you tried the rear fog lamp and the side lights when the ignition is turned on ie the dim dip ? One thing I have found was that one of the in line fuses was wired in to the side lights but only on one side, ie when the fuse was taken out only the pilot lights on the o/s would come on.

Spot Lamps
Can anyone tell me if it is ok to connect 4 spot lamps to one relay? I already have two spots connected and wanted to splice two more in to them. Also any ideas what could be the cause of a squeking / rubbing sound from the rear wheels when I reverse slowly. The wheels are not rubbing on the wheel arches but cant think of anything else. Thanks Ty

horns and spots
For the spots, the easiest thing to do is buy a spot/driving lamp fiting kit available from Halfords etc. Follow the instructions enclosed and you shouldnt go wrong. For the horns, why 6? Anyway, the wiring is very simple as it is a single wire that provides power through the switch on the light stork and grounds through the body of the horn compressor. Replacing this wire is much better than a by-pass. If the switch is dodgy, then you may need a new one. Your hardest job is going to be finding space for all those horns :-) I have seen them in the boot (not great forward projection) and under the rear subframe (again, not great) but in the engine bay or if you have two short ones, mount them back to back behind the front number plate so they point sideways.

Rims
i run mine without arches and 165 tires on 4.5j x12" steel wheels that i refurbed sandblasted and sprayied. iv gone though mot fine with it like that. stick out a bit but no one really notices and iv seen worse. 5j will prob run ok just i dunno how wide u can go before the beading can slip and cause a blow out under hard cornering id play it safe and not risk it. i found a massive differnce in handling with the 165 tires vs 145. i found at low speed if i turned the wheel sharp they would slide falward and not steer though lack of grip as if it was rear wheel drive very stange. i also found at top speed the car very twitchy and scarry and that under hard braking from speed the poor grip was aparent. that was with pirelli 145 tires. one night i was comming back from work and i went round a 90 deg bend at around 25mph had been round this bend hundreads of times, but the road was greezy from leafs and the tarmac was the smooth sort. i turned sharply round the corner and the frount wheels slipped was only in second gear (too low for the grip in hinesight) and then suddenly the rear of the car kicked out 45deg i corrected it and it went the other way, then the other then the other by then id left the road and had hit a street lamp bend it over and as it bent it acted as a ramp to role my car onto its side. so now its a lil dented. but after that i thought i must get wider tires for safty if anything now it feels alot safer. but the council just sent me the bill for the lampost £1000, so now i wish id bourt the 165 tires before as id said i was going to but avoided as my pirreli tires had plenty of tread. it really goes where u want it now u can turn full lock and accelerate and it will go where u stear it not slide.
